Lawn Mower Maintenance Tips
A well-maintained riding lawn mower will run smoother and keep your lawn looking good for longer. There are basic maintenance tasks that every lawn mower owner should employ, but please read the manual for your specific model for detailed information.
- Each use:
Check the motor oil level (change if necessary) [gas-powered mowers]- It is recommended that the oil be changed every 25-50 hours of operation (1-2 times per season)
- Check the gas [gas-powered mowers]
- Adding fuel stabilizer is recommended, especially if your mower is used infrequently
- Check the tires
- Clean the mower deck
- Allow the mower to cool down before clearing debris and grass clippings
- Do not expose battery-powered mowers to water, rain or wet conditions
- Check and clean air filters (replace as necessary) [gas-powered mowers]
- It is recommended that air filters be checked every 25-50 hours of operation and replaced every 100-200 hours of operation
- Sharpen the lawn mower blades
- Sharpening blades every 25-50 hours of operation is recommended
- Remove battery after each use [battery-powered mowers]
- Store batteries indoor in a cool, dry place
- Do not overcharge
Every or every other season (100-200 hours of operation):
- Clean the carburetor
- Change the spark plugs [gas-powered mowers]
- Check the belts and pulleys (replace as necessary)
- Grease the bearings
